Module I-VI, KA, course 6:
Anne Folke Henningsen: Transnational Migration, Nationalism and Identities
Taking the last 200 years of European migration history as its point of departure, this course aims at exploring the dynamics of transnational migration and identities up until today. Migration processes contributed to the shaping of Europe as we know it and they continuously do so today in various ways. During the semester, questions related to citizenship rights, legality/illegality, territoriality and nationalism will be addressed on the large scale of European migration history and policy but also more specifically in the contexts of the Nordic countries, the experiences of which will be analysed through comparative studies. Discourses on multi- versus monocultural societies will be discussed in depth in an attempt at understanding their genealogy and political significance and function in contemporary European societies, particularly the Nordic countries. Three key words will run through the course material and the issues addressed: spatiality, temporality and networks. Even if they are intimately connected there are some clarifying distinctions to be made: The first key word is obviously linked to territoriality and the movement from one place to another, but it can also signify inhabitancy in social and cultural spaces. The second has to do with the longevity of the migrant’s stay in one place: whether the residence is short term or permanent and whether or not its duration is decided by the migrant him/herself or rather by national legislation. The third relates to the importance of connections and contacts in the migration process – in the actual movement from one country to another as well as in diasporic communities.
Taking in to account the importance of the varying and shifting motivations for transnational migration – e.g. labour, refuge, family relations – the course aims at discussing both the subjective migrant’s interest in the move as well as the receiving countries’ policies regulating the migration processes and the motivations behind those policies.
Social and cultural categories such as gender, age, class and ethnicity and/or race will be introduced as fruitful tools in the understanding of the complex processes of transnational migration as it is intertwined with nationalistic discourses and identity formation.
Course objectives (besides objectives mentioned in the Curriculum):
• know the history and the development of transnational migration with a particular emphasis on the Nordic countries, as well as have obtained a solid understanding of present day political, social and cultural aspects of the phenomenon
• identify, analyze and discuss the most central issues and problems within the thematic area covered by the course
• identify and demonstrate knowledge of relevant theories concerning transnational migration and the political, social and cultural ramifications thereof
• clearly communicate the key themes of the course |
