The Uyghurs are a Turkic speaking Muslim minority concentrated in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, which is situated in the far Northwest of the People's Republic of China. While culturally and linguistically they exhibit many commonalities with other Turkic speaking Muslims constituting the titular majority in their independent states in neighboring Central Asia, the Uyghurs have been part of the Chinese polity at least since the annexation of the region by the Qing dynasty (mid-eighteenth century). Modern Uyghur ethnonationalism has to be understood within the framework of this
'in-between-ness'. Drawing on a combination of historical and ethnographic works, the course explores the roots and development of modern Uyghur identity with reference to their history in Inner Asia and to aspects of Uyghur social practice documented in the pre-socialist and socialist periods by indigenous observers, foreign explorers, ethnographers and anthropologists. In the sense that Uyghur history is closely tied to the history of the territory they occupy today, the course also offers an introduction into the emerging field of Xinjiang Studies and into the research problems and methods of historical anthropology. |
